Watch Free Movies & TV Stream Smarter with Plex. I was using an i7 2012 Mac Mini as my plex server and it did pretty well but it cannot output 4k to a display. I just ordered the base model Mini but upgraded the storage to 256GB so I am hoping it runs a bit better than the i7 2012. I’ve been running my plex media server off my 2010 Mac mini server intel core 2 duo and have had no issues for the last 4 years. It’s on current version of Mac OS sierra and current version of PMS 1.3.0 and my setup consists of 12tb of WD mybook externals. Only issue I’m running into is running out of ports and storage space.

I'm gonna be honest upfront, I'm looking to save myself a couple hours of Google boredom.
I recently got a Roku stick for my TV, I feed it via a Plex server on my laptop. The actual media is stored on a NAS that is always on, I'm getting tired of having my laptop open while I listen to music or watch a movie.
So, what is the cheapest single board computer (SBC) that will run my plex and just hum along with little maintenance from me? Hopefully the system will be nothing but an SBC and a power supply. Requirements?
1) Cheap
2) Quiet
3) Wireless
I'm assuming it will run Linux, which I'm very comfortable with. But I'm not ruling out other OS's.
Thanks!

Best Mac Mini For Plex Server

ive just ordered a 16gb ram m1 mac mini to replace my 2018 i5, 64gb ram model.
i just use them as plex servers perhaps overkill, but my i5 mini has worked great and i watch lot of 4k HDR movies to my plex app on my main tv, kids watching on their tvs around the home and even more remotely at their mums house
i only got the m1 as it seemed on numbers alone a big jump, and i thought maybe it may be that little bit better for plex transcodes when going from 4k to 1080p for impatient remote users.
i just have an external 14tb drive for my media, ran it for a number of years now with around 2000 movies, a lot of high bitrate 50gb files.
anyone else using a mac mini as plex server and made the same upgrade?
